Mt. Washington

You’ve probably seen the bumper sticker saying “This Car Climbed Mt. Washington.” Well you can earn one yourself, and the effort is well worth it, for the view you get from New England’s highest peak. You can drive up for yourself or take a guided tour. You can even hike if you’re up for it. And be sure to check out the museum exhibiting some of the touring vehicles that have been used to make the trek in the past. In operation for 150 years, the Auto Road is the nation’s oldest tourist attraction.

If you go:

Open to private vehicles from mid-May to mid-October. During the winter, you can take a ride up on the SnowCoach. Bikes are not allowed on the road except those participating in Newton’s Revenge, a bike race up the mountain.
